Meet Jasper Onono

Director and Lead Android Programmer at Kola Studios

It is usually said that internal motivation stems from the challenges we face in life, in the books of history have men and women who refused to bow down to challenges but rose up everytime the results were not what they expected.
On today's career spotlight, we feature Jasper Onono, A Co-founder at Kola Studio, a company that revolutionized mobile games development in Uganda with their award winning game "Matatu". In the bid to understand what it takes to develope such awesome applications, we engaged him in a discussion, this is what we asked

Who is Jasper?

I am the Co-founder of Kola Studios, I play the role of director and lead android programmer at Kola Studios
 

Relating to your designation on your profile at Kola Studios, who is an Engine Programmer ?

An Engine Programmer is someone who writes and modifies code to build applications and software
 

What is a typical day like for you while in the core line of work?

On a typical day, I code some applications and fix errors as I meet up with the team to test and discuss a way forward
 

Why did you choose that career path?

I have a big passion for solving problems and writing code
 

What particular skills do you bring to your workplace?

I bring the skills of development, creativity and team leadership
 

Is software development well paying ?

Yes, it pays just enough nothing extraordinary
 

What do you find cool about software development ?

I like the ability to create, write code and see the results from that. It is fulfilling and most importantly enjoyable .
 

Any challenges ?

Yes, some problems and algorithms are hard to solve and create while programming, you can spend over a week fixing one problem
 

What subjects did you take in school and how have they influenced your career path  ?

I took mathematics, it helps me when coming up with algorithms, i took computer science and this helped me learn all the skills I have as a programmer today
 

What is your education to date?

I have a Bachelors Degree in Computer science
 

What aspects of your education journey have proven most important for you in line of work?

My education in University when I studied computer science really laid the ground work on all the skills i needed as a programmer
 

What trends are you seeing in software development . What is the future like for the industry?

I see technology influencing every industry, its going to be boundless. We will see it in health, education, farming, climate. Tech will be center of every business.
 

Any key people that influenced your career direction ?

Yes, my Mathematics teacher in high school
 

What is your dream job?

I am doing my dream job
 

What have been the most rewarding events in your career so far?

Building my first game app called Zword at hackathon was a very exciting and rewarding event. I got the confidence to do more and more programming from that day forward.
 

As a student, how did you cope up with the pressure to excel in class?

I learnt to manage my time efficiently.
 

Finally, what advise would you give someone considering a career in software development and what skills should they master?

They should explore different aspects of software development and stick with the one they enjoy. Its best when you work on something you enjoy
