The Relevance (Why the course is being taught)

Background

Modernisation and development affect men, women and children differently and also are likely to respond differently to the challenges they pose. This therefore makes it possible for many people to part from their traditional support systems. As a result of this, many people are facing problems of isolation and thus unable to cope with increasing personal and social pressures. We live and operate in a traumatized world, where children are sexually molested by all kinds of people, including teachers and their own parents. It is also clear that many people the world over are being traumatized due to the different social upheavals like wars that subjected them to severe pain. Therefore, the need for a course in guidance and counselling to produce relevant modern support systems, as well as and individuals who are agents of change.
The course in guidance and counselling will prepare students for several jobs, including teaching, organizing and managing programmes, the practice of skills in guidance counselling, at different levels, entrepreneurship, as well as conducting research.

Rationale for the Course

The low quality of life among the poor , the rich and vulnerable individual groups , increasing social problems such as poverty , crime , prostitution , HIV/Aids , child abuse, among others, all call for guidance and counselling related interventions. The Programme will provide professional education and training in guidance and counselling to students. It is essential to get trained human resource with knowledge and skills both in theory and practice to effectively address development issues.

Course Objectives

  • To provide a solid scientific foundation for relevant disciplinary areas sufficient for students to build their counselling skills.
  • To facilitate students have the ability and knowledge about the roots of social problems.
  • To equip students with knowledge about guidance and counselling, including its best practices.

NOTE:
The degree in guidance and counselling will take three years based on semester system, and leading to the award of Bachelor of Guidance and Counselling.

Course Entry Requirements

At least five (5) passes at “O” level (UCE) or its equivalent and two relevant principle passes at “A” level (UACE) obtained at the same sitting or its equivalent.

A post “O” level diploma or certificate with at least two years relevant experience in the desired field.
