Telecommunication Engineering is an important profession involved with electronic, communication and power equipment and systems. These manifest themselves in the Information and Communication Technology sector and Electric supply industry (ESI). While communication and the use of energy conversion technologies are as old as man, the perpetual desire to improve has led to new technologies. This produced tremendous development in what are now called the developed nations.
To sustain and improve on the quality of life brought about by modern technology, the wheels of industry must be kept turning. This requires large amounts of electrical energy without greatly endangering the environment, better and faster communication systems more reliable equipment. While the trend is towards greater specialization as a result of these technological developments, certain conditions still prevail, requiring middle-level technicians to competently perform functions in the general electrical engineering field.
Telecom Engineering technicians have to provide solutions to day-to-day electrical engineering problems in the ESI. Since this requires planning, installation, operation and maintenance of the necessary computer units and systems, and interaction with people; the study of electrical engineering is therefore crucial.
