Civil Engineers are concerned with planning, designing, constructing and managing the physical infrastructure and facilities needed for the smooth functioning of contemporary society so that the optimal quality of life can be ensured for its people. Examples are water supply systems, including dams and major pipelines, transportation systems such as roads, railways, airports and harbors; and structures such as bridges, sports stadiums, office blocks and convention centres.

Educational outcomes

Our Civil Engineering programme focuses on outcomes rather that simply on input. The Civil Engineering Department has defined specific outcomes to be achieved by the Civil Engineering students at Ndejje University. These outcomes are:

• Ability to apply knowledge of mathematics, science, and engineering to Civil Engineering problems. Including ability to identify, formulate and solve the associated problem.
• Ability to design and conduct experiments, as well as to analyze and interpret data. Graduates should be able to set up and conduct engineering experiments. Graduates should be able to present experimental results through appropriate graphical display. Graduates should be able to select and apply appropriate statistical methods for basic data analysis.
• Ability to communicate effectively using written, oral and graphic methods of communication.
• Ability to design a system, component, or process to meet desired needs.
• Ability to work on multi-disciplinary teams.
• Understanding of professional and ethical responsibility.
• Graduates should have a background in humanities that provides them with a foundation for understanding the impact of engineering solutions in a global and societal context.
• Recognition of the need for in life-long learning. Graduates should realize that a B.Eng (Civil) degree is the beginning of their professional societies.
• Ability to use the techniques, skills, and modern engineering tools necessary for engineering practice. Graduates should be able to use computers to solve engineering problems and to evaluate solutions. Students should be aware of current techniques in civil engineering practice.

Programme Structure

The programme in Civil Engineering shall consist of FOUR (4) Core Mathematics (MTH) Course Units, TWO (2) Core Computing and Information Technology (CIT) course Units, FOUR (4) Elective Course Units, and an Individual Project in the 1st and 2nd semesters of the Fourth Year. The normal length of the program is 178 credits. In order to graduate, the student must pass all the courses attempted while maintaining the minimum acceptable Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 2.00.

Duration

The B.Eng (Civil) is a full-time programme that extends over THREE (3) to FIVE (5) academic years. Each academic year consists of two semesters each 17 weeks, 15 for teaching and the last 2 weeks for end of semester examinations; and a 10 weeks recess term for Vocational; Industrial Training. Teaching will take place mainly on Weekdays but students are expected to undertake some field and laboratory work during weekends. All lectures are given in English at the Ndejje University.

Normal entry is straight to the first year for a FOUR (4) year full-time programme. However, TWO (2) alternative degree entry routes are available via:

1. A Foundation Year whose courses are tailored specifically for people who wish to apply for an engineering degree at Ndejje University, but who do not have the necessary entry qualifications making it a FIVE (5) year course.
2. Secondly, straight to the second year of the programme for good Diploma holders.
