The Bachelor of Science in Civil and Environmental Engineering provides Civil Engineering Training with a focus on environmental engineering to enable them to practice as professional engineers upon graduation and registration by the professional board. Additionally, students are prepared through courses such as ethics, communication skills and project management to be able to work in multi-disciplinary environments.
The programme trains skilled versatile, professional and ethical Civil and Environmental Engineers for the national and International work place by providing training and design, construction supervision, operation and maintenance and evaluation and monitoring or relevant engineering interventions for a safe, healthy and sustainable environment.
A graduate from this program will therefore be an embodiment of vital skills necessary for sustainable, equitable, and beneficial development and progress at the national, international, and global level.
Program Objectives
General Objectives
In this program, the students receive the traditional civil engineering training with a focus on environmental engineering to enable them to practice as professional engineers upon graduation and registration by the professional board. In addition, they will take courses in ethics, communication skills, project management, etc. to be able to work in multi-disciplinary environments.
The program trains skilled, versatile, professional and ethical Civil & Environmental Engineers for the national and international workplace by providing training in planning and design, construction supervision, operation and maintenance, and evaluation and monitoring of relevant engineered interventions for a safe, healthy and sustainable environment.
Civil & Environmental Engineers apply science and technology to develop engineered solutions to environmental, public health, and ecological problems. This means that the Civil & Environmental Engineers deal with issues in water supply and sanitation, waste management, pollution control, construction, health and safety, environmental monitoring, planning and management, environmental data collection and analysis, operation and maintenance, etc.
The main objective of the Civil & Environmental Engineering program is to educate students to achieve sufficient knowledge, skills and specialization to meet demands of the job market and the national development objectives. Specifically, the program is intended to:
EXPECTED OUTCOMES
Because of the broad nature of the issues involved, a Civil & Environmental Engineer usually works as a member of a multi-disciplinary team of specialists including (bio)chemists, (micro)biologists, epidemiologists, medical workers, environmental scientists, social scientists, social advocates, ecologists, managers, surveyors, geographers, lawyers, and engineers in other fields, among others.
Graduates from the BSCEE program will have several exciting and fulfilling employment options. They may be self-employed or work with government, research, academia, or industry. Non-governmental organisations are also potential users of the skills and training received. Civil & Environmental Engineers are needed at all levels of society, as Environmental Impact Assessment and Audit practitioners, Water Engineers, Teachers, Sanitary Engineers, Air Quality Engineers, Treatment Plant managers, in Environmental Health and Safety, Cleanup and Remediation, among others.
At the end of the course, the graduate will be expected to have exposition of the following capabilities:
