Ever wonder what happens in an Insurance company, ever wonder what is done in an insurance company, who writes those policies. Well in the bid to be that light unto your career path, we caught up with Mr Joseph Muramuzi an Insurance underwriter with Jubilee Insurance Company of Uganda and this is what we asked!

Descibe your typical day

Hahaha. Well, it is full of a lot of working and meetings the bigger part of the week. I start my day with a prayer and reading of the word. Follow up with reading emails and responding as required and confirming on meetings with clients and brokers depending on the prior set program. I then delve into the days work which usually includes issuing policies, issuing insurance certificates among others. All I can say i usually don't notice when its time to go home.

What are your main tasks and responsibilities at work

Assessing Insurance risks and underwrite policies of cover plus premium computation and business development.

What are your main challenges

I am usually too busy I never concentrate on one task. I run a number of them concurrently which at times cant guarantee thoroughness.

What particular skills do you bring to your workplace 

1. High customer orientation, 
2. Quality communication and relational skills
3. And other technical stuff you learn on job but must have your arithmetic and math on your finger tips too.

What's cool about your job

Meeting people Its not a boring job. and the satisfaction of standing with clients and helping them over come adversity

What's not cool about your job ?

We are legally bound by our actions .You cant help a client even if you want if the help he needs is not agreed upon in his contract policy. It makes you look inhumane

How did you get your current job ?

Through references and interviews.

Which key people influenced your career direction ?

My sister. She worked in this industry earlier on and My former manager . I worked with this company as a filing clerk while in my vacation and I admired him.

Does your job allow to give you a life style that you are happy with ? 

Well I can say yes but life styles are made by a person they are tailored by individuals but the job most definitely supports.

What course did you take in university and how have they influenced your career path ?

I studied Bachelors of Business Administration very key in this industry because its business driven.

What is your Education to date?

I have a Bachelors Degree in Business Admin with a specialty in Marketing.

What aspects of your Education System have proven most important for your job?

The Chore business units and the interpersonal training in the course i offered at University

Have you considered undertaking, or do you plan to undertake any further training as part of your job?

I have enrolled for CII (Chartered Insurance Institute) which is a professional course for Insurers.

What have been the most rewarding events in your career so far?

I got a promotion from an Underwriting Assistant to a Senior Underwriter as well as elavated to being a Liason Officer to DFCU Bank

What personal qualities do you have that help in your career?

I am a quick learner and I am confident

What is your dream job?

I hope to be a marketing consultant in terms of professionalism but aspire to be an entrepreneur as well.

What are the most important personal characteristics required for the job?

Confidence , Diligence and Integrity

What advise would you give someone considering this job?

Go for it. It is still a young industry there is a lot of space to accommodate new players.

What kind of work experience would provide a good background for this position?

Experience in asset and risk management Actuarial Science would be a great added qualification
