The Relevance (Why the course is being taught)

Justification

The BSc. Accounting degree aims to deliver an education that meets the needs of the professional accountant and business executive in the 21st century. The programme covers a broad range of business courses, with a particular focus on accounting. A key objective of the programme is to prepare students for a career in accounting. There is a shortage of accountants in Uganda in both the private and public sector. The graduates of this programme will reduce on this shortage. This programme incorporates the International Federation of Accountants (IFAC) requirements of training an accountant, which emphasizes; knowledge, skills, practical experience, accounting values, ethics and attitudes. An accounting degree is often seen as a good way to enter the accounting profession. This, students will be provided with learning skills and knowledge that are necessary for them to find a quicker path to the accounting profession.

Thus, BSc accounting is broadened to integrate professional programmes (as earlier mentioned) offered by world recognized accountancy bodies. Students are therefore privileged to train both academically and professionally. They are thus in a position to meet a broad range of the high taste demands of the largest number of users of accounting manpower, not only in Uganda but also in the global community. The programme prepares students to sit/or seek for the Certified Public Accountant (CPA) or Certified Management Accountant (CMA) examinations/exemptions.

Areas of competences

The Bsc accounting prepares students for a wide variety of careers in professional accounting, including public accounting, industrial accounting, internal auditing, and government service, and to provide an academic framework for future graduate study.

The undergraduate program is intended to provide students with the knowledge and skills necessary for success in an entry-level accounting position.

The help students understand the context in which accountants work; they will have the opportunity to acquire a solid background in economics, finance, risk management, law, information systems and quantitative methods.

The program’s technical content provides an excellent foundation should students decide to sit for the Certified Public Accountant’s (CPA) exams , the Certified Internal Auditor’s (CIA) exams, and Certified Management Accountant’s or ACCA exams.

Graduates can prepare financial statements suitable for publications, Management accounts for internal use and can provide a thorough financial analysis to entities including the ability to predict business failure.
