The Relevance (Why the course is being taught)

Globally, Journalism and Media are associated with development. The attainment of sustainable development depends on socio-economic and political environment where the role of mass media is important. The media is meant to serve both elite and those at the grass root levels. They are expected to focus their time and resources on sensitive issues that matter most to the people.

Media has a powerful influence in advancing national development in developing countries. Journalism intends to use the media to inform, educate and sensitise the public on issues that will emancipate and empower the society. The media is used as a tool to pursue and contribute to the social and economic goals of the Nation by publicizing development work that will enrich the lives of the people that are exposed to it.

Also, the media is effectively utilized to achieve national unity, patriotism among the citizens, to foster political stability, promote national integration for peaceful existence and stability. It is supposed to bring to the limelight what the people need and what they expect from the government.

Course Entry Requirements

Admission/Entry Requirements A candidate shall be eligible for admission to the National Certificate in Journalism and Media Studies programme on meeting any of the following minimum qualifications:

a) Ordinary Level Entry Scheme (Uganda Certificate of Education entry scheme)

The candidate should be a holder of an Uganda Certificate of Education with at least three passes obtained at the same sitting.

b) Certificate Entry Scheme

The candidate should hold a Junior Vocational Certificate (JVC) or any other relevant certificate obtained from a recognised institution.
