The Relevance (Why the course is being taught)

The Bachelor of Science in Medical Education (BSME) programme covers the health education, bio-medical sciences and specialized areas in Health. The educational component will expose the learners to the knowledge, functions and competencies of a professional trainer. The biomedical sciences and specialized courses will empower the graduate tutor to cover the scope and in depth of specific courses that she/he will be expected to teach upon graduation. The Bachelor of Science in Medical Education programme aims at enhancing the knowledge, skills and Competencies of tutors so as to enable them address the global and national medical education needs of various stakeholders.

Rationale

Medical Education instructors play a vital role in enhancing health care, health education, research and delivery of medical services in the country. There is an increasing need to train competent medical personnel to manage the ever-increasing health challenges in the country. The idea behind Bachelor of Science in Medical Education is to produce competent education specialist in health services delivery. Medical education is a discipline which cannot be neglected in the 21st Century especially when the health sector is faced with numerous challenges which require immediate attention. The emergence of numerous health and medical challenges require medical educators who will not only address such challenges but also train other health workers to address them.

Graduates of this programme will be instrumental not only in Uganda but also across the continent to train the much needed health workers.

Programme Objectives

The objectives of this programme are to:

  • Equip educators of health professionals with adequate skills and knowledge in various disciplines.
  • Equip trainers or Health Tutors with the appropriate knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary for teaching health professionals.
  • Demonstrate how to manage Health Training Institutions, providing primary health care services and participating in health professions’ education and research.
  • Train middle level health professionals who will be able to provide safe and quality health care to individuals, families and various communities in the country.
  • Provide Health Tutors with appropriate and relevant competencies within the identified health education disciplines.
  • Prepare students for lifelong learning.

Course Entry Requirements

a) Direct entry:
Students entry through A’ level must have at least two principal passes in Biology and Chemistry at advanced level of education and at least five passes at ordinary level at different or at one sitting or its equivalent.
b) Diploma Entry:
A diploma from a recognized institution of higher learning with a credit in any of the following Health Professional disciplines; Nursing, Midwifery, Clinical Medicine and Community Health, Medical Laboratory Technology, Clinical Psychiatry, Psychiatric Nursing, Physiotherapy, Clinical Orthopaedics, Orthopaedic Technology, Environmental Health, Pharmacy Technician, Occupational Therapy, Radiography, Public Health Dentistry
