The Relevance (Why the course is being taught)

Background

In the recent decades the world has witnessed tremendous developments in different aspects thanks to globalization as well as quick exchanges of information due to the information revolution. This continues to the witnesses globally. Hover these developments have emerged with attendant social problems due to cultural integration to a certain extent. It is as well as important to observe that we live and operate in much traumatized, world, where children are sexually molested as well as the poverty challenges especially in the less developed countries (LDC's). the ravages of wars, civil unrest and HIV/AIDS are having professional negative impact on various communities in Uganda especially and globally generally. Therefore, the need to train human resource in Guidance and Counseling, who can act as agents of change. A diploma course in guidance and counseling will train students for several counseling challenges to help their various communities to cope with different social problems.

Rationalize for the course

The low quality of life among the poor, the rich and vulnerable individual groups as well as increasing social problems such as poverty, crime prostitution, wars, HIV/AIDS, among others, all raise the need for guidance and counseling interventions. The program will provide professional education and training in guidance and counseling to students. It is essential to get trained resource with knowledge and skills both in theory and practice to address such issues.

Course Objectives

  • To equip students with skills in guidance and counseling.
  • To train students who can identify areas for intervention in communities.
  • To equip students with knowledge and ability to help communities alleviate social problems.

NOTE:

The Diploma in Guidance and Counseling course will take two years based on a semester system. It has a strong emphasis on in-house practicum.

Course Entry Requirements

At least five (5) passes at “O” level (UCE) or its equivalent and one relevant principle and two subsidiary passes obtained at the same sitting at “A” level (UACE) or its equivalent or a post “O” level diploma / certificate.
