The Relevance (Why the course is being taught)

Background

Leadership and Human development are not inseparable. The greatest challenges to development especially in the Third World is lack of well trained, skilled and nationalistic leaders; those who see leadership as an opportunity to serve their community by fighting poverty and underdevelopment in a way that promotes holistic development. In Many parts of Africa, leadership is widely viewed as an opportunity to immerse wealth hence the continued widening gap of inequality, impoverishment as well as marginalization of the majority of the people in many parts of Africa. A leader should be viewed as both an active participant in the development process as well as a positive agent of development at individual, family, community as well as at the National level. He/she should be a positive influence and one who initiates development.

Therefore, leaders need skills. Although some may have inborn leadership attributes, the concept of training has always been lacking and the question is; who trains the leaders? Where is the school for leaders? Having a degree in a particular field may be appropriate, but training and qualifying various people specifically in leadership and Human Development could be a step forward in solving the many underdevelopment problems in Africa. The introduction of a bachelor’s degree in leadership and Human development in Ndejje University is indeed intended to address those challenges.

Rationale for the course

Untrained leaders specifically in the skills of leadership and human development are responsible for the stunted growth speed at which LDCs are moving as far as Holistic development is concerned. There is urgent need therefore to train leaders in both leadership and human development skills if the growth speed at which Africa is moving can be made more faster.

Without establishing the direct link between leadership and Human development, LDCs will remain at the periphery hence, the continued dependency and patronage.
The degree in Leadership and Human development will take a multidimensional approach so that a leader acquires mult-skills which can help him/he transform his/her community in a holistic manner.
