The Relevance (Why the course is being taught)

Introduction

Modernisation and development affect men, women and children in the same communities differently. They are also likely to respond differently to the challenges they pose. This therefore makes it possible for many of the traditional support systems to remain dysfunctional and therefore need to be strengthened. Thus, many people are facing problems of isolation and are unable to cope with increasing personal and social pressures. It is also clear that many people the world over are being traumatized due to the different social upheavals and wars that subject them to severe pain. Therefore, the need for a course in Community Psychology, that will provide graduates who can offer relevant modern support systems and strategies to facilitate the emerging challenges.
This course will prepare students carriers like teaching, organizing and managing community psychosocial programmes, the practice of these skills in different work environments, as well as conducting research.

Rationale for the Course

Community psychology course will endeavour to see that the people in the communities live in harmony and tranquillity not only with one another but also with their environment at large. Furthermore community psychology pinpoints out needs, provide services and sensitize the community on how to gain access to the resources already available and also train individual who will implement the designed programmers.

Course Objectives

  • To facilitate students to conceptualise community dysfunctions, which may be due to poverty, high crime rate, sexual abuse, drug abuse, HIV/AIDS, wars, disability among others.
  • To enable students appreciate and have insight into the various social problems and challenges that different communities are faced with.
  • To enable students appreciate the need for counselling in communities.

Note:

The degree in community Psychology will take 3 years based on semester system leading to the award of Bachelor of Arts in Community Psychology. It has a strong emphasis on practice as it relates to theory.

Course Entry Requirements

At least five (5) passes at “O” level (UCE) or its equivalent and two relevant principle passes at “A” level (UACE) obtained at the same sitting or its equivalent.

A post “O” level diploma or certificate with at least two years relevant experience in the desired field.
