The Environmental Science Program at Uganda Christian University (UCU) is an interdisciplinary program that integrates the natural and social sciences to generate and apply new knowledge about the quality of our environment and the sustainable use of its resources. It combines environmental aspects of the disciplines of chemistry, biology, ecology, information technology, engineering and physical geography complemented with studies in environmental policy, management and law.
It is a three year program leading to a bachelor's degree in Environmental Science (BES). The program curriculum emphasizes the practical and entrepreneurial aspects of science and technology in the area of environmental studies, and seeks to nurture a sustainable problem solving approach of best practices.
The knowledge and skills imparted to BES graduates include relevant applied research to develop and/or maintain appropriate and sustainable technical solutions to environmental problems such as: community capacity in pollution mitigation and adaptation, solid waste management, as well as widely applicable expertise in bio-processing, polymer science, environmental microbiology, and other emerging technologies.
The Environmental Science course provides students with the scientific principles, concepts, and methodologies required to understand the interrelationships of the natural world, to identify and analyze environmental problems both natural and human-made, to evaluate the relative risks associated with these problems, and to examine alternative solutions for resolving and/or preventing them.
Environmental science is interdisciplinary; it embraces a wide variety of topics from different areas of study. Yet there are several major unifying constructs, or themes, that cut across the many topics included in the study of environmental science: scientific process, energy conversions, spheres of the environment, ecosystems, human impacts, technology, social, economic and cultural factors, natural resource management, and others.
A graduate from this program will therefore be an embodiment of vital skills necessary for sustainable, equitable, and beneficial development and progress at the national, international, and global level. (Source: Uganda Christian University, School of Science&Technology website)
