Ophthalmic Clinical Officers Training School provides clinical officer training, more so in the field of Ophthalmology to produce Competent and well trained Ophthalmic Clinical Officers (Health workers) for improved (eye) health in Uganda and beyond.
Ophthalmic Clinical Officers’ Training School, Jinja was started as a joint venture by the Uganda Government (Ministry of Health) and the then Royal Common wealth Society for the Blind (now Sight Savers) in 1989. The training of Ophthalmic Clinical Officers was piloted in Mulago National Referral Hospital after which the school was transferred to the then Jinja Provincial Hospital (now, Jinja Regional Referral Hospital).
This was done to decongest Mulago which had many training courses and also to give the trainees a chance to experience upcountry practice in a provincial setting where they were to finally practice. The training project was also to provide an opportunity for building a major Ophthalmic referral center outside Kampala. It was also anticipated that Jinja would provide space for expansion of the school at an appropriate time.
