The Martian review – Matt Damon shines as stranded astronaut
Director Ridley Scott makes the most of an excellent script and a first-rate star for a scintillating sci-fi trip to the red planet
Overall it’s a very good movie, and while there are mistakes in it, it is the first genuine Mars movie. It is the first movie that attempts to be realistic about human beings grappling with the problems of exploring Mars, as opposed to various movies set...... Read More
Computer Science is one of the most diverse fields in the world. It’s not just about making complex games or hacking into top secret archives. Movies tend to dramatize everything. When you enter university as a CS freshman, little do you know the size of opportunities that lie ahead for you. I spent the first year of my university worrying endlessly that I was doomed because I didn’t know what I was good at and nothing seemed to make sense....... Read More
Let me first put a disclaimer here; this is strictly my opinion and not the opinion this site.
As hormones dictate, a normal teenage may at some point during his or her time in secondary school develop feelings of the "buterfly kind" for another, in or outside the school term. That's the obvious bit, but it's not the focus of my article. I wonder what effect these humble, probably even innocent feelings have on the average high schooler. So I...... Read More
Scientific research has provided us with a number of ways to get the learning juices flowing, none of which involve paying money for good grades. And most smart teachers know this, even without scientific proof.
1. Fine-tune the challenge. We’re most motivated to learn when the task before us is matched to our level of skill: not so easy as to be boring, and not so hard as to be frustrating. Deliberately fashion the learning exercise so that students are working...... Read More

You could be sitting on gold mine without realising it. Everyone possesses one or more special talents or qualities that can be put to good use. It could be a gift that you have always suppressed in the belief that it is nothing special.
It could be something you have always wanted to do, but felt held back because somebody somewhere, especially when you were in your formative years, dismissed it in...... Read More
A growing body of evidence suggests that the most significant thing about college is not where you go, but what you do once you get there. Historian and educator Ken Bain has written a book on this subject, What The Best College Students Do, that draws a roadmap for how students can get the most out of college, no matter where they go.
As Bain details, there are three types of learners — surface, who do as little as...... Read More
Chances are, if you have a smartphone or tablet, you’ve played Angry Birds. While Candy Crush Saga might currently top the charts, Angry Birds is the best selling app of all time. From an educator’s perspective, what’s exciting about Angry Birds’ popularity versus something likeCandy Crush is that getting good at Angry Birds means skillfully – and often unconsciously – using conceptual physics knowledge. It’s something video games have been doing for years, but Angry Birdsbrought it to a mass audience, sneaking a bit of science into many students’ digital diets.

Like any middle class child in a developing country, education for me was not just about the motions. It birthed dreams, it squeezed the best out of me; but above all, it gave me the guts to dream, to believe, that someday I would be somebody. That is about everything that echoes in the mind of an African child. Get the best grades out of school, and become a doctor, an engineer, an accountant or something of like; something that...... We’ve all probably heard that story about the guy who studied for five years just to become a doctor and then on his graduation day handed his graduation certificate and transcript to his parents. In the story, he tells his parents that he never really wanted to become a doctor, he did it just for them. In reality, this happens quite a lot, except many never hand their degrees back to their parents, but end up pursuing the...... Read More
