The Higher Education Students’ Financing Board announces the qualified programme - courses and the universities for each academic year to participate in the student loan scheme. 

Last year’s loans were extended through 12 universities (five public and seven private universities). For now, applicants who proved to the board that they are financially incapable of financing their higher education were admitted from one of the 15 universities before applying for the loan.

The participating public and private chartered universities for the 2015/2016 academic year are;

2. Mbarara University of Science & Technology
3. Kyambogo University
4. Gulu University
5. Busitema University
6. Muni University
7. Nkumba University
8. Bugema University
9. Ndejje University
10. Kampala International University
11. Uganda Christian University
12. Uganda Martyrs' University
13. Islamic University in Uganda
14. Kabale University
15. Bishop Stuart University.

Kampala International University tops with 372 students, Makerere University 220, Kyambogo University 150, Ndejje University 137 and Busitema University 99, among others. 

Students pursuing 49 academic programmes are currently benefiting from the scheme from the above participating universities, this increased from 26 courses last year.

Over the following years the loans shall be extended to cover courses in humanities in the ratio of 3:2 Science to Humanities programmes. But the applicant must have passed sub-mathematics to qualify for the loans.
