INTRODUCTION
The Margaret Trowell School of Industrial and Fine Arts (MTSIFA) shall strive to provide a three-year full-time Bachelor of Industrial and Fine Art (BIFA) degree programme that aims to develop cultural, historical and industrial understanding of the arts/design as well as the creative and
performing ability of its students.
Realizing this, MTSIFA has made arts and design-sensitivity to all aspects of visual experience central to the programme. The task of the artist, designer,and art/design historian is to celebrate visual experience through a variety of media, technology and styles.
Objectives
Art and design as a human activity does involve aesthetic, intellectual, and practical skills, although to become broadly significant, it should interact with the content in other fields, especially science, comparative education and industrial studies in Studio Art/Industrial Design/ Museum and Gallery Management. Study trips, field attachments and theoretical courses in Art History and art criticism provide on-the-job, supervised, evaluated experiences which contribute to the student’s overall education and development.
Primary goals include improvement of art and design production and creative strategies, aswell as museum and gallery management skills. Specific careers exist in the general areas of Fine art, Visual communication design, Fashion,Textile and Interior design, as well as industrialdesign.
Margaret Trowell School of Industrial and Fine Arts graduates have established careers in such fields as studio-practice in art and design, teaching in secondary schools and tertiary institutions, research and anthropology, antique restoration, film and video production, as gallery and museum curators, illustrators, etc.
The future holds a great deal of promise for artists and designers who can combine skills with a breadth of understanding. There following shall be principal areas of study: Painting, Art History, Sculpture – Carving and Modelling, Sculpture- Fabrication, Drawing, Drawing Special, History of Art Special, Ceramics, Jewellery design, Printmaking and Illustration, Graphic design, Fashion and Textile design,
Weaving, Photography, Advertising and Communication Design.
