The Relevance (Why the course is being taught)

The main aim of this program is to provide educational opportunities to acquire knowledge, skills, values and attitude that is essential for the development of safe midwifery practice, professional competence, and confidence.

Learning Outcomes
This program has been designed to provide an opportunity for midwives who hold diplomas in various areas of midwifery, paediatric and public health nursing among others to upgrade and
complete their nursing education at the baccalaureate level. By the end of this program, learners will be able to; 

  • Demonstrate an extensive and profound understanding of midwifery evidence-based learning modalities and to embrace birth as a normal process.
  • Display an understanding of the role of midwives in helping to reduce the impact of gender inequalities on women and families and their vital role in reproductive health.
  • Illustrate use of analytical and inquiry-based learning skills to evaluate the factors affecting the childbearing experience.

Teaching Methods

  • Student-centered learning, to promote full use of individual abilities.
  • Problem - based learning using small group tutorials to develop critical thinking skills.
  • Lectures to provide guidance in scope and depth to broaden students understanding.
  • Clinical demonstrations to emphasize a holistic approach to patient/client care.
  • Community placements for community assessment and appropriate interventions.
  • E-Learning opportunities through online and internet-based technologies.
