Introduction

In this era of the information revolution and globalisation, a country like Uganda needs media professionals who can disseminate accurate information and analyse issues for the ir respective audiences. There is urgent need therefore to train journalists and mass communication professionals to have practical skills of the trade, if journalism as a profession can effectively contribute to the holistic development of Ugandan societies. Without a solid academic foundation and training, Uganda and Africa generally will remain at the receiving end of information flow specifically from the western powerful media corporations.

Journalism as a profession is highly dynamic, expanding field of study where persons engaged in it are constantly inquiring, analysing, interpreting, criticising, compiling and disseminating information about issues in events. The diploma Course seeks to provide basic and standardised training in the journalism profession, by providing technical knowledge, kills and attitudes in journalism and how to operate in the media industry in order to practice effectively to keep an informed citizenry.

Rationale for the course

The media industry in Uganda is among the fastest growing. Sustaining this growth requires well trained and skilled journalists who will be able to gather, write, process, store and disseminate information. The Diploma programme seeks to standardise the training of Human Resource in Journalism and Mass Communication fields. It is specifically for people who wish to pursue a career in these fields. The course provides the basic technical knowledge, skills and attitudes in order to practice effectively.

Course Objectives

• To equip students with skills and techniques in news gathering
• To enable students appreciate the information needs of the various audiences
• To facilitate students be able to use and adapt technology in the practice of their profession.

NOTE:
The Diploma in Journalism and Mass Communication is integrated and presented in four semesters, leading to the award of Journalism and Mass Communication. It strongly emphasizes media practice where knowledge will be consolidated with the hands on practice.
